Fire safety in the high mountains
Planai is part of the Schladming Vier-Berge-Schaukel, Austria's biggest ski area, with 115 kilometres of piste and 52 cable cars. Situated right next to the mountain gondola station, the Schafalm first opened its doors for the 2003 winter season. The ski lodge is built in the simple style of a mountain farm – right from the planning phase, the builders and Salzburg architects Fritz Hauswirth & Partner felt it was important for the new building to blend harmoniously into the Styrian landscape. The stylish lodge, owned by brothers Heinz and Reinhard Schütter, invites winter athletes to enjoy the restful and restorative atmosphere. A special feature, visible through the restaurant's glass wall, is a sheep pen (Schafalm), from which the lodge takes its name. Decorated with local materials, the interior architecture has been transformed into an authentic ambience.
Challenging roof
While building the Schafalm, the roof presented a special challenge. Firstly, it had to be able to withstand the extreme winter weather at over 1,800 metres altitude. Secondly, the building is right next to the Planai six-man gondola cable car and there was a risk the cable could be damaged if the roof caught fire. To protect the cable in case of fire, the ski lodge needed an especially fire-resistant roof made with PAVATEX over rafter insulation: roofing membrane PAVAFLEX DSB 2, 15 millimetres of GKF plasterboard fire protection, double planked, two 80 mm thick PAVATHERM timber boarding as well as an ISOLAIR base board, 22 mm. The final top covering was constructed with a roof sub-frame base construction for the copper tiling of the Alpine roof.
